In every case there are its own truisms, the pillars on which everything stands. In the formation of a healthy walnut tree, which will bear fruit for many, many years, one of such pillars is pruning. The first pruning after planting differs from the following, but it is very important!
Regardless of when you planted the seedling – in the fall (which is preferable) or in the spring, in the spring, you should cut it. The principle is very simple: two beautiful buds are chosen at a height of 30-40 cm from the ground and an oblique cut is made above the upper one at a distance of 0.5-1.0 cm. Why is the slice cut? It’s very simple – if you make a straight cut, then any bird, such as crow, can easily sit on such a column. Sowing on such a column of a crow can easily break off a young green shoot, which we absolutely do not need! At a slanting cut, the bird can not grasp it. The cut is covered with a garden fume.
Why are two kidneys left? For an elementary safety net. With one kidney something can happen. And of the two there is always a choice. When young buds appear from the buds, then from the two you choose the best. If the best upper – leave it, and the bottom break off.
It is at the stage of selecting the main escape and a stick is inserted, which will support your tree for the first three years. The stick should be big and powerful. Oak or acacia pillars 2.5-3 meters in height and 5-6 cm in diameter. No other walnut stick will survive! If you did the right spring charge (and it is obligatory !!!), then the pole into the soil enters without problems. A young shoot is tied up with a garden cambric eight, so that he will not be chattered.
Such a severe pruning requires technology. Do not spare seedlings! With proper care for the growing season, the walnut will give an increase of up to two meters. With such pruning in the first year of vegetation, you will give the opportunity to properly develop the root system, and this is very important! If the seedlings are left “as is”, then they will give a gain of 30-40 centimeters, which will not give you an opportunity to begin shaping the crown the next year.
